About Michael, Row the Boat Ashore
Few songs carry a river crossing quite like this one. Rooted in the American spiritual tradition, it was first documented among formerly enslaved people on the Sea Islands of South Carolina in 1867, its verses painting the Jordan as both real water and promised passage. The imagery is spare and vivid: one boat, one set of oars, a sister steadying the sail, and on the far side, milk and honey, glory, and a trumpet already sounding the welcome.
