About Reeds & Rushes

Stand at the edge of any slow pond and the margin tells its own story, tall reeds clicking in the breeze, cattail heads like velvet torches, and the sharp green fans of iris rising from the mud. Sedges and rushes weave a dense, whispering fringe that shelters nesting birds and guards the water's edge from erosion. These plants have been read, harvested, and woven by people for thousands of years, from Egyptian papyrus scrolls to tule-reed boats on the shores of California.

How to play
