About Music & Film

Since 1925, the Grand Ole Opry has aired on WSM radio out of Nashville, making it the longest-running live radio program in American history. For decades the show called the Ryman Auditorium home — a former gospel tabernacle whose wooden pews and barn-red brickwork gave the music an almost sacred weight. Every Saturday night, fiddles and steel guitars rang out to a live audience that knew every word, while millions more tuned in across the country, front-porch and farmhouse radios warm with the sound.
