Closing weekend at the Lakeview, and the pavilion does what it does every final Saturday: the band until midnight, the lanterns burning down along the dock, half the county dancing the summer shut. At twelve sharp Ned Berry carries the takings down the lakeside path to the boathouse, where Gordon counts the last night himself. The office is locked. The lamp is burning. Through the window Ned can see the desk, and Gordon at it, head down, the nightcap glass beside his hand. Ned knocks twice, then breaks the pane above the latch, and by half past twelve the music has stopped for good. Everyone from the pavilion stands on the dock in their dancing shoes, very quiet.
