The county doctor arrives at one and works by lamplight; in the morning the sheriff rows over from the landing. The whiskey in the decanter is sound; every bottle behind the pavilion bar is sound. The glass alone carries it, under the good rye, a faint scent the doctor knows from a textbook and hoped never to meet: bitter almonds. The word he writes on the form is poison, and the inquest will say it louder. The sheriff stands a long while over the traces of the evening: one glass, one chair, a door that was locked. Nobody broke in, he says at last. Whatever came for Gordon Tice was already inside the Lakeview.
