Vivian Drake's songbook lives on the piano in the pavilion bar, swollen with decades: standards, requests, the summer numbers with her own chords penciled in. Two kids on a boardwalk, one singing for nickels, one promising her a stage. He built the stage and married elsewhere, twice, and she took the summer job every year anyway, because the lake is the lake. You are asking if I loved him, she says, reading the sheriff exactly. Twenty-five years ago, with the whole of my heart. Banked coals warm, sheriff. They do not burn houses down.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.

- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
