Harriet Tice's ledgers are famous at the county bank: thirty years of seasons balanced to the penny. The sheriff borrows the books, and it is the bank manager who finds the wrinkle, because it never touched the books at all: a second mortgage on the Lakeview, taken out by Gordon in the spring, papers signed in town. The interest went out of an account the ledgers have never listed. Harriet receives the news with her hands folded, and something crosses her face too fast to name. Thirty years, she says, and he borrowed against the pavilion like pawning another man's watch. When did she learn of the mortgage, the sheriff asks. A pause you could pour tea in.
