The office safe sits under the window with its door swung wide, and the strangeness is what remains: the season's cash in banded stacks, untouched; the payroll envelopes, untouched; the deed box, empty. No scratches, no force. Opened with its key by someone in no hurry, who took the sale contract and the mortgage papers and left four thousand dollars sitting like an insult declined. Two keys open it, Ned tells the sheriff: Gordon's, on his ring, and the spare that lives with the passkey in the bookkeeping desk, because the safe is where the books sleep. The sheriff closes the safe door gently. The killer wanted the paper dead, he says. The man was almost incidental.
