Chapter 1 of 10
Lois Kincaid knocked on the office door at eleven with the late ticket money, and when nobody answered she let herself in. Roscoe lay across his desk. The steel cashbox was on the floor, open and empty, and the back door hung wide with splinters sticking out of its frame. Lois touched his wrist. Then she stepped back and said the Lord's Prayer under her breath. On the screen above her, the giant spider was crawling over a water tower for four hundred and twelve cars. Sheriff Bascom drove out from town in twenty minutes. He shone his flashlight on the door, then on the crowbar in the weeds. "Somebody off the highway pried that door, grabbed the money and ran," he said. "We'll never see him again." "Maybe," Lois said. She kept her eyes on the doorstep.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
