Chapter 3 of 10
Merle had pointed the sheriff at Duane Pickett, so Lois went to find him first. On Sunday morning he was at the snack bar, scraping black grease off the wall. "I didn't do it, Mrs. Kincaid, whatever Merle says." "You said you would, in front of half the town." "He docked me four dollars on Friday for burnt popcorn, and I'd have said anything." Duane threw down his scraper. "I was right here all night." "Merle says you're learning the booth." That brightened him up. "He lets me thread the second projector, and I watch for the dots. They flash in the top corner of the screen right before a reel ends. At the first dots you start the motor, and at the second you switch over." "Even from down here?" "Every time, and Merle never misses one."

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
