Lois drove the earring out to the Haig house that afternoon. Nadine came to the door in a yellow dress, and Roscoe's suits lay folded in boxes on the porch. "You're packing him up already," Lois said. "He'd have done it faster for me." Nadine saw the pearl in Lois's hand and took it. "Where did you find this?" "Under Merle's cot." Nadine closed her fingers over it. "Roscoe found out on Friday, and he was going to see his lawyer on Monday. I told one person that, and only one." "Did Merle ask you for anything?" "No, he only listened." She glanced at her watch out of habit. "Roscoe phoned me every Saturday at ten to give me the take. You could set a clock by him." Then she went inside and shut the door.

How a mystery chapter works
