Sixty Dollars

Chapter 7 of 10

At five o'clock Bascom arrested Duane Pickett. A man who wouldn't give his name had called from the Skyway's pay phone about Duane's Ford. Under its seat were sixty dollars in Skyway bank bands. Lois found Duane in the county jail with his right hand wrapped in a rag. "I never saw that money," he said. "Somebody put it there." "And what happened to your hand?" He hid it behind his back. "Nothing happened to it." Lois waited him out. "I burned it on the popcorn kettle Saturday, and don't you tell anyone." He wouldn't look at her. "Roscoe docked me for every little thing, and Merle says a boy who burns popcorn will burn film." Bascom leaned in the doorway. "The boy had a motive and the money, Lois. That's a case." "That's sixty dollars," Lois said.

How a mystery chapter works

  1. 1
Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
  2. 2
Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
  3. 3
One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
  4. 4
The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
