Twenty customers remembered the kettle fire, and by nine o'clock Bascom let Duane go. He came straight back to the Skyway. At twenty to ten the Western was on again. Lois started her wristwatch at the foot of the booth stairs. She walked the fence in the dark, past the back row, to the office under the screen. It took four minutes, and four more to walk back. Duane was waiting at the snack-bar window. "The dots came up at ten, same as last night, and he didn't switch." "Is that wrong?" "Not if he's running the big reel. Merle put it on Saturday afternoon to rest the old motor, he said." Lois looked up. Merle was standing at the little booth window with his arms folded, watching her.
