Chapter 9 of 10
Friday morning: the deed on the table, the answer at the stove making coffee. Three people knew the press's secret: its maker, the woman who watched, now Ray. The lantern before dawn, the worry gone early from Grandmother's face: the hiding was hers, done the week the letter came, to put the farm's life beyond trouble's reach. What she could not do afterward was find it; the knowing came apart in her hands, the way mornings do. Pearl understands first and takes the coffee pot as the old woman realizes, from their faces, what she did and lost; nobody in that kitchen lets her stand alone. You kept it safe, Pearl says, plain as bread. The job got done. The press held the deed as it held Papa's word: faithfully, longer than memory: what a safe is for.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
