The diving platform was the pier's pride once. Roy Calder and Douglas built it in 1946, planks and handrail and the high ladder, and the paint they argued about still shows under nine years of weathered gray. After the war, insurance men decided what a pier could keep: a padlock and a notice went up, and the platform stood at the dark end collecting splinters while the pier stayed cheerful. The constable's man goes over it in daylight. The padlock hangs open on its hasp, unmarked: opened with a key, not forced. The notice is untouched. On the top planks, where nine years of dust should lie even, two sets of prints and the long scuff of an argument. Two keys were cut for that lock. The chief asks the obvious question, and nobody in the office answers.
