The lawyer's office smells of blotter ink and August dust. A folder holds the papers Douglas signed the afternoon he died: an option, a schedule of debts, and a proxy dated that morning, authority to sell the pier entire. Both halves. The notary's stamp is real, the witnesses real, and the second signature reads Roy Calder in a firm round hand. The constable's man lays the proxy beside a receipt Roy signed in June. The names match letter for letter: too well, the way a careful man copies. Roy's own hand slants left and drops its endings. And when the inkwell in this office was open, Roy Calder was on the boards before thirty witnesses, painting the carousel rail. Someone signed his name to the sale of everything he owns; the man with the pen is past asking.

How a mystery chapter works
