The rockets go up at nine, fired from a barge off the pier head. For twenty minutes the crowds pack the grandstand and the rail, faces up, watching the sky come apart in sparks while smoke drifts over the water. It is the one stretch when nobody watches ground level, and everyone who works the pier knows it to the minute. Mrs. Aldervane, who sells taffy, tells it plainly. Between barrage and applause she heard a quarrel past the barrier, two men at the dark end, and the word she caught was thief, twice, in a voice that has called bingo numbers for eleven years. She thought it was the fireworks making everything sound like anger. Then the finale went up, gold over the sky, and by the time the embers came down the voices had stopped.
