The harbor chart in the pier office is older than the office. Sandbar, channel markers, the set of the current past the pier head, inked and re-inked by men who worked the water before the boards. On closing night the moon three days past full, the tide turned at twenty to twelve. From midnight the ebb ran hard, the undertow that carries flotsam past the last piling and beyond the bar before the drift slacks. The constable's man finds the ebb circled in soft pencil, the circle fresh: it sits atop a coffee ring from that week. Somebody stood at this chart before closing night and worked out what the sea would do with whatever it was given. Not fury. Arithmetic, done in advance by a man who knows this water, the detail Roy Calder's lawyer will like least.
