Wallace Kemp does not look like a man who kills piers. He looks like what he is: a developer from inland with a briefcase, an option, and a surveyor on retainer. His maps show the boards gone and a parking lot in their place, forty acres of asphalt for the new highway, acreage figures in a hand as tidy as his hat. He has made no secret of the offer; he is proud of it. Under questioning he is patient, then insulted, then bewildered. His option died with Douglas: a signed seller is worth a parking lot, a dead one years of probate and a courtroom of heirs. Released, he stands on the boardwalk looking at the shut-up arcades, and a man who came to buy a pier for asphalt looks, for one unguarded minute, like a mourner.
