The carousel is the pier's heart, Sal Petrocelli its keeper: thirty years of painted horses and gilding, the mirrors, the motor nursed through August, the canvas and tarp each fall. The last ride at half past eleven is Sal's ritual: slow, music up. He has never missed it; neither, in eleven years, has Roy Calder, standing at the lever while the rounds run out. This closing night Sal ran it alone. He tells it in a flat voice, polishing a pole that does not need it. Roy had walked toward the dark end a quarter hour before, like a man with an errand. Sal called that the horses were waiting. Roy did not turn. The carousel, Sal says, taught him one thing: you learn who a man is by the rides he never misses, and the night he misses one.
