Chapter 1 of 10
Tessa Quirk lit the first lantern on the square at six, and the walk set off behind the band with the children in sheets. The candy cart had gone down the path just ahead of them. At the corner, the first post's lantern went out, and then the next one did. "That's the wind," said a father behind her. "There isn't any wind," Tessa said. "Look at the flags." The lanterns kept going dark ahead of them, one post at a time, just past the reach of their own light. Tessa opened three of them. Each candle stood straight in its cup, its wick still warm. "Somebody's out ahead of us," the father said, "putting them out." At the turn by the covered bridge, a tall figure stood in a long coat. "It's the Hollow Man," a child shouted.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
