Chapter 2 of 10
Tessa was on her way to see Abner, the old lamplighter, when Lyman Ware waved her over to the hardware store. His candy cart stood by the door with the empty sacks folded in it. "Have you seen the doors?" he said. She had. Overnight someone had chalked the same mark on seven front doors, a hook over a short bar. The Grote house had one, and so did two farms that lost their wheat in the fire. "Abner says it's lamplighter's chalk, and it means lamp out," Lyman said. "The Rowe porch is clean, though." "So I hear." Lyman wiped his glasses on his apron. "Abner taught those marks to half the boys in town, back when there were lamps to light." He went in and turned the sign to Open.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
