Chapter 4 of 10
That same evening, Tessa climbed the hill to the Rowe house with a jar of soup. Jody let her in without a word, thirty-nine now, with the same cowlick she remembered from her front row. Mrs. Rowe lay propped up on her pillows. "Somebody stood on my porch shouting at my boy when the band started last night. Now they've sent you." "Nobody sent me, Mrs. Rowe." "Nobody ever asks me about the books, either. I kept them for the co-op for thirty years, every bushel in and out." She nodded at a gray ledger on the dresser. "They said my books burned with the granary. I kept my own copy. With my boy blamed for the fire, I wasn't going to hand the town another reason." Jody came back in. "That's enough for today, Mother."

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
