Chapter 6 of 10
Abner hadn't been past his gate since his hip went in the spring. Tessa found him on his porch on the square. "You weren't on your round that Halloween," she said. "No. I was up in the granary loft with a bottle," Abner said. "Henry let me in. When the church bell rang six, I went down the hay ladder and home." She showed him her sketch of the chalk mark. His hand shook as he took it. "I couldn't close a hook by the time Jody came, so I taught him to leave it open," he said. "I only ever had two boys, and the first did well for himself. I gave the Grote girl my old book of marks." "Did anyone go down the path ahead of the walk?" "Nobody," Abner said. "My snuffer's in the shed."

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
