"Lyman Ware says I chalked those doors," Marta Grote said, before Tessa had her coat off. She was scrubbing jugs at the fire hall sink. Abner's old book of marks sat on the shelf above her. "Mine was one of them. Do you think I'd mark my own father's door?" "Then where were you during the walk?" "That's my business," she said, scrubbing harder. "If that's all you came for, you know the way out." "I came about your father." Marta dried her hands and fetched a coffee tin. Inside lay her father's pocket watch and a note in pencil, folded small. "Mother kept it for the kindness," she said. "The co-op gave Dad the night off so he could take me on the walk. He went back anyway. He never trusted anyone else with the horses."
