Chapter 8 of 10
After she read the note, Tessa took Marta straight to the town hall, where the clerk brought out a gray folder bound with tape. "The inquest file was sealed twenty years ago, as a courtesy to the Grote family," the clerk said. "The co-op asked for it." "Nobody ever asked my mother," Marta said. Lyman Ware came in behind them with a carton of candles for the council supper, out of breath. Word went around fast in a town that size. "Your mother asked me herself, Marta," he said. "I only did what she wanted." "Then she can't mind now," Marta said, and turned to the clerk. "Open it." The clerk cut the tape and read the deputy's first line aloud. "Keys to the granary held by the watchman and the co-op manager, Mr. L. Ware."

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
