Chapter 9 of 10
Somebody had chalked the Rowe porch in the night, with the hook closed. Jody had scrubbed it off by the time Tessa came at dusk to walk the old route with him. "Marta was up here shouting at me when the walk set off," Jody said. "I went down to the bridge to get away from her." "And twenty years ago?" "I was on Mill Lane. A man came out of the granary's side door with a lantern and locked it behind him. I always thought it was Abner, so I kept quiet and took the bus. In September Abner told me he never had a key." They reached the lot, where only the old concrete silo still stood. "He saw me that night," Jody said. "At the inquest he told everyone so."

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
