Eddie's dance card turns up in his jacket at the bandstand, the printed program of the evening with names penciled against each number. A foxtrot for the mayor's wife. A tango he never intended to dance. And against the last waltz of the year, where the whole room assumed one of two names would sit, there is neither. Not Lena. Not Connie. The corner of the card that held the last name has been torn clean away, and torn recently, the fibers still bright. The room does its arithmetic quietly. Two women wore Eddie's promises that night, and the last waltz belonged to a third. Whoever tore the corner was not hiding Eddie's secret. Eddie was past protecting. They were protecting somebody still in the building.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
