Lena Hart's dressing room is small and exact: the mirror ringed in warm bulbs, roses from an admirer she never names, powder and pins in a saucer, the silver gown for the finale hanging pressed and ready. On the dressing table, squared like a verdict, sits a short stack of envelopes in Eddie's handwriting. Every one unopened. The newest is marked in Lena's own hand, two words, return to sender, and the postmark is three weeks old. She does not cry when they ask her about Eddie, which some in the ballroom hold against her. Three weeks of returned letters says she had finished crying before the year did. You do not send back a man's words unless you are done listening, and you do not stop listening all at once.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
