The private booth behind the velvet curtain is where the Starlight keeps its secrets, and tonight it kept two champagne coupes and a bottle in a bucket of ice gone to water. One coupe is clean at the rim. The other wears lipstick, a deep crimson with a blue cast to it, and here the ballroom's memory is unanimous: nobody at the Starlight wears that shade. Lena sings in coral. Connie wears rose pink or nothing. The napkin beside the second glass is folded once, the fold of somebody who did not stay long. Eddie poured for a guest behind the curtain sometime before midnight. The waiters saw him carry the bottle in himself, which he never did, being a man who liked an audience for his generosity. Whoever the crimson belonged to, Eddie wanted no witnesses to the conversation.
