Victor Duval's office sits above the ballroom, one window on the floor below, and the music comes up through the boards like weather. On the desk, open because Victor does not care who sees it, lies the club's ledger. The accounts are kept in a banker's hand, and Eddie's column reads like a slow accident: advances, markers, a season's wages drawn and gone. At the bottom, dated yesterday, one line in red: all debts called due, first of January. Victor does not pretend to mourn. He says, in front of witnesses, that the only thing Eddie Marr ever repaid was patience, and that his daughter was worth fifty of him. Then he goes back to his figures. Hatred that open is its own kind of alibi, or wants to be.

How a mystery chapter works
