Iris Bell came in on the evening train, the seven-forty from the coast, one suitcase, no hotel. The porter remembers her because she tipped him and asked nothing, and the ticket agent remembers her because of what she carried folded in her glove: a return ticket, the early express, two seats, reserved under the name Marr. Dated the first of January. The timetable does not lie about what Eddie intended. He was leaving with her before the year was a day old. Found at the station hotel bar after the news, Iris does not perform her grief either, which makes two women tonight. Five years ago he chose the Starlight over me, she says. Tonight he chose me over everything. She turns the ticket over once in her hands and gives it to the agent to refund, both seats.
