The bandstand empties slowly on a night like this. Music stands folded, sheet music boxed, the brass wiped down and cased. Frank Ross polishes the trumpet longer than it needs, valves, bell and mute, the way a man cleans something to avoid a room. When the case closes, it does not close flat. Under the velvet lining lies a small triangle of card, printed on one side, five letters penciled on the other: IRIS. It is the torn corner of Eddie's dance card, and Frank does not deny it. He tore it at a quarter past twelve, before anyone knew anything, because Lena was going to see that card. She had been made a fool of enough for one lifetime. He looks at the committee of faces and adds, quietly, that he would tear it again.

How a mystery chapter works
