Dora Quinn has kept the same habit for forty years: a notebook below the counter, pages ruled in her own hand, and a line for every coming and going she can see from the cloakroom window, with times in the margin and initials in the column. Not from suspicion, she says. From tidiness. The night of the thirty-first fills four pages, and the committee reads them like scripture. The mayor at ten past. Frank at a quarter past, by the stairs. Iris Bell, out through the lobby at five to twelve, alone. Then the pages go quiet where the night did. Between twelve and half past, every soul at the Starlight has a line, an initial, a time in Dora's margin. Every soul except one. Dora closes the notebook and looks at nobody, which is how everybody knows.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
