The final chapter
One o'clock, and the Starlight is bright and very quiet. The band sits on the stand without playing. The champagne stands in its buckets going flat, and the balloons that never dropped sway in the net like a held breath. On Dora's counter the evidence lies in a row: a torn card, a stack of returned letters, a crimson-rimmed coupe, a ledger, a ticket for two, a pawnshop receipt, a notebook open to four ruled pages. Your nine clues are the word list now. Find them all in the grid, and the letters the puzzle never uses will spell out what happened in the missing half hour, and who could not take it back. The Starlight has never once missed a midnight. It has never had one like this.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
