Abel Snow rows out at first light through the storm's leftovers, the sea still sulking, gulls wheeling the tower. The relief man's first job is the lamp, and the lamp needs nothing: wick trimmed, reservoir full, the great lens turning its slow gold circle. His uncle's stairs, his uncle's brass, everything in order. He calls up the tower and gets its echo back. The watch room holds the wrongness, neat as a still life. The kettle cold on its hook. The logbook open, an entry stopped mid-sentence. One oilskin gone from the pegs, the spare still hanging. Through the gallery window, the dory rides its davits, cover lashed tight. Abel stands a long minute, ashamed of the first thought that arrives, which is not about his uncle at all. It is who keeps the light now.
