Maud Callender came out the point road in the Coast Guard truck at half past six. Stanley Nowak met her at the dwelling door in his shirtsleeves. "I went up at six to put the lamp out," he said. "He wasn't there. He isn't anywhere." In the hall, two oilskins hung on their pegs by the door. Luther's storm lantern hung beside them, still lit, turned down low. Maud climbed the tower. The lamp burned steady, and the lens turned on its clockwork, slow and even. The brass was polished. The logbook lay open on the desk. "Did you hear anything in the night?" she asked. "Only the wind," Stanley said, and looked at the floor.
