Maud left the hall to Stanley and climbed back to the watch room to read Luther's own account of the night. Sept. 21. 6:44 P.M. Lamp lit, clock wound. S. Nowak on watch. Wind NE, fresh. 9:00. Wound clock. Glass falling. Wind NE, strong gale. S.N. 12:00. Wound clock. Watch to Mr. Brigham. S.N. 12 Midnight. Took the watch. Wind NE, whole gale, heavy sea on the bar. L.B. 1 A.M. Lantern on the gallery again, signalling. Going down to see who The last line looked like Luther's hand in a hurry, cramped and leaning. It ran to the edge of the page and stopped. The pen lay wiped clean in its tray. Stanley stood in the doorway with his cap in his hands. "I never went near that gallery after midnight," he said. "Not once."
