An hour later, at sunrise, Maud found Stanley in the lamp room, turning down the wick. "Two short and one long," she said. "On your watch, four nights this month. Who were they for?" "The fish tugs coming in. The boys like a wave." Stanley rubbed his thumb along the rail. "And after midnight?" "I went to bed at a quarter past twelve and slept till six. I told the Chief so." Behind them the clock ticked in its case, its weight hanging on a chain in the shaft. The brass winding crank hung on its nail, square at the business end. Maud looked out at the lake, gray and heaving after the gale. Down on the rocks below the point, two surfmen were wading out to something caught in the weed.
