Dr. Levasseur arrives a fortnight early and is honest: the pension board was not coming to count blankets. Nine years ago a Marguerite survivor swore the light wavered near midnight. The inquiry preferred the logbook; the deposition went into a drawer. A new clerk, a new audit: the board's machinery turned the drawer out and sent him to reconcile the record. The questions were about relief, never the lamp. Gull Point was a one-keeper light, a second man refused funding twice, and a one-keeper light is a lie the service tells itself: no man tends a lamp alone without one night he does not. The file would ask where the keeper stood at midnight. Some questions, the doctor says, a man walks into the sea rather than answer. Some men, says Pratt slowly, only need you to believe they did.
