Chapter 9 of 10

That evening, after she lit the lamp, Maud took the old volumes down from the watch-room shelf. The hand in that last line bothered her more each time she read it. Abe Elkins came up the stairs, cap in hand. "I slept through it," he said. "My night man woke me at five past four and said Gull Point had stopped. I said the keeper was winding late, and I went back to sleep." "And on Sunday you rubbed it out." "A dead keeper, and a Chief asleep in his bunk." Abe looked at the lamp. "My night man will swear where I was." She had not opened these books since Rob died. In 1919 her husband's hand ran down each page. His assistant's entries ran between, with Rob's red pencil in the margins fixing the spelling.

How a mystery chapter works

  1. 1
Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
  2. 2
Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
  3. 3
One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
  4. 4
The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
