Maud went to Keogh's store on Thursday morning with Luther's log under her arm. Abe Elkins waited out on the porch. "The light needs its winter stores," she told Fergus. "Would you write the order? You know what the Service sends." Fergus licked his pencil. "Go ahead." "Two dozen lamp chimneys. Ten gallons of oil. One signalling lantern, red glass." He wrote it out and turned the pad around for her to sign. Maud opened the log beside it, at the last page. "Signalling," she said. "Two l's, both times. Rob's spelling. Luther never wrote it that way in his life." "Half the lake spells it so," Fergus said. "Half the lake didn't leave Abe's station at half past two," Maud said. "Effie came home at half past four, and your boots weren't by the stove. At twenty past four you were winding Luther's clock." "I was down at the tug." "Your engineer says not. You never could let a light stop, Fergus." Fergus set the pencil down very carefully. "I'd have paid him back," he said. "By spring. Radio was going to double." In the back doorway, Effie put her hand over her mouth. Abe came in and took off his hat. Find all nine clues, then read the leftover letters left to right, top to bottom.
