Horace Venn calls a meeting of concerned citizens in the feed store's back room, his own back room, and lays out the case like a man selling fence posts: the widow, the date, the stranger, the angle. The lawyer from the county seat, invited for weight, asks one dry question. Has the man inquired about the deed? Asked to see it, asked its terms, asked anything of anyone? The room comes up empty. The deed sits in the bank's box, bored stiff. The transfer terms are posted at the courthouse for any schemer to read, and the clerk confirms nobody has asked in months except Horace, four times. The lawyer gathers his hat. The confidence man, he says, studies the prize. Your stranger has studied nothing here except a porch rail and the walk to church.
