The final chapter
Founder's Day, and the whole of Harmony fits itself into the church hall for the deed signing, rumor in its Sunday best in the back rows. On the table: the deed, a pen, and Ada Bly's folded hands. The nine clues have walked in with the crowd. A duffel that held a war and almost nothing else. A guarded watch, a pawned medal, postmarks that traced a convalescence, a photograph with two Harmony names, a canteen scratched twice, a deed never asked after, one true signature, and a chaplain's packet holding a dead man's last request. Your nine clues are the word list now. Find them all, and the letters the puzzle never uses will spell what Tom Culley came to Harmony to do. Horace Venn is rising from his seat in his good suit. So, from the third row, unhurried, is the man off the bus.
