Chapter 1 of 10
At six in the morning, Moses Till carried the Colonel's coffee up the ladder to the texas. That's what the crew called the officers' cabin behind the pilothouse. He knocked. No answer. He turned the latch and opened the door, and the cup slipped from his hand. The Colonel lay on the floor by the stove. "Captain!" Moses shouted. "Come quick!" The captain came running, with Lou Dorsey, the first mate, behind him. Dorsey felt for a pulse and shook his head. Nathan Creel came down from the pilothouse, a pencil behind his ear, and stared. Dorsey looked around the room. The bed was made. The chairs were pushed in. The Colonel's coat hung on its hook. "Everything in its place," Moses whispered.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
