Kane would have to explain those markers. But first Dorsey wondered what else the Colonel had been hiding. He asked the captain to open the safe. Inside was the bill of sale for the Belle. "He said he was selling her to a man who'd keep her running," the captain said. Dorsey read it twice. "The buyer is the Vicksburg Salvage Company. Boilers, engines, anchors, even the beds. They're going to cut her up for scrap." The captain sat down. "So this whole farewell cruise was a lie." "The calliope is on the list too," Dorsey said. Behind them, a tray rattled. Cora Deene, who played the calliope and helped serve breakfast, stood in the doorway. "My calliope?" she said. "For scrap?" She put the tray down and walked away without a word.
