The constable finds them at knee height under the marquee: two pale scuffs on the bricks where ladder shoes bit, and higher, faint half-moons where the rails of an extension ladder kissed the facade twice as it walked the building. In the scuffs, worked into the rubber tread, flecks of paint in colors Main Street has not worn in years: a dairy's cream and gold, the hardware store's old green, signs that came down a generation ago. Pearl Hays looks at the flecks a long time. Painters' ladders carry their history in their shoes, she says. This one has been climbing this town since before the war. She does not say a name. She straightens a velvet rope that did not need it, and looks down the street toward a shop retired as long as its owner.

How a mystery chapter works
