The paint supplier's boy makes his rounds on a bicycle with a basket full of invoices. Last week, he says, an order made the counterman whistle: books of goldleaf, the real kind, plus sizing and shellac, delivered to an account that has been closed since before the boy was hired. He carried the parcel himself. He does not remember the street exactly; he remembers a smell of linseed and old wood, like his grandfather's barn but tidier. The constable checks with the counterman, who checks a drawer of yellowed ledger cards and goes quiet. The account is under a name half the signs in this county used to carry in their corners, small and proud, like a maker's mark. Nobody melts brass down, the counterman says slowly, and orders gold leaf the same week. You gild what you love.

How a mystery chapter works
