The milkman's route crosses Main Street at five, and his statement is a nose's. Thursday dawn, the block by the Bijou smelled sharp and clean, he says, like his uncle's boatyard: turpentine, and under it something harsher, the stripping compound that lifts old varnish off wood and weather off metal. Friday dawn, the same, drifting faint from somewhere east of the theater. He thought nothing of it. Painters are early people. The constable stands where the milk cart stood and turns his face into the morning air like a weathervane. Thieves, he reasons aloud, load brass in a truck and are counties away by the second dawn. Nobody hauls stolen letters two streets and then spends nights cleaning them. Whatever is happening east of the Bijou, it is not a getaway. It is a project.
