The fire brigade lends its long ladder for a proper look at the empty rails, and the brigade captain comes down whistling low. Fresh scaffold hooks, he reports, set into the original 1924 anchor points, the ones painted over so many times most men would never find them. Whoever rigged this knew where every hidden anchor lived, hung a painter's scaffold in the dark, and worked the letters off in sequence, west to east, the way you would if you had hung them east to west a quarter century ago. Faye takes this in with her arms crossed. The Bijou's blueprints burned in the office fire of thirty-nine; no drawing of those anchors survives anywhere. There is, she says slowly, exactly one place left in town where that rigging still exists. She taps her own temple. Memory.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
