Cooper Street goes to bed early, which is how everyone on it knows the old sign shop is awake. Three nights running, lamplight behind the workshop's frosted glass until nearly morning, and the pot-bellied stove sending up woodsmoke a retired chimney should have forgotten how to make. The neighbors have not knocked. On Cooper Street, a man's lamplight is his business. Opal, walking home from the late show count, adds the detail that turns geography into certainty: through the gap where the frosted pane meets the sash, a workbench end is visible, and on it, catching the lamplight, something curved and bright under a cloth. Gold, says Opal, does a particular thing to light. Forty years of counting change under a lamp, she says, you know gold when it winks at you.
